Birchbox April 2014

Birchbox April 2014

Birchbox's theme this month was "Rainy Days", and it took extra long to get to me! I normally have my box before the site updates, so it is usually a surprise. Not this month! I got my box later than usual, so I knew what to expect.

First Look
So, I'm having camera issues with my iPhone :( Sorry!

My idea card was to "try new things like contouring or curling your hair".
I do both of those already, try again.

Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap Deep Pore Facial Cleanser

Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap

This soap is supposed to fight blemishes and signs of aging. You apply it, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse it off. I have used it twice so far, and it makes my skin feel very, very clean. Squeaky clean! But, not tight or dry. I find that really unusual; most of the extra-clean-feeling soaps leave me tight and dry, but this one leaves my skin soft and smooth. I like it! Plus, black soap is different from the soaps we are all familiar with. It is the ash of various plants (cocoa pods, etc) mixed with Shea butter and left to saponify in the sun. There aren't any unnatural ingredients in this.

Full size is $16 for 4 fl.oz., the 1 fl.oz. sample is worth $4.

Fekkai Technician Color Care Shampoo

Fekkai Color Care Shampoo

I have not tried this. I probably won't. Why? Because it is sulfate-based. I find it highly discouraging that a shampoo designed for colored hair would contain SLS! Yeah, yeah, it smells great and leaves your hair soft (according to the reviews)... but seriously? Sulfates? I don't care how lathery my shampoo gets, I don't want to strip all the oils and color! Fekkai Fail.

$20 for 8 fl.oz., making the 2 fl.oz. sample worth $5.

Color Club Gala's Gem Collection in Gold Struck

Color Club in Gold Struck

This is a very light pink, with a gold undertone. It's not very gold in and of itself, so I don't know why they named this "gold struck." The finish is pearly and reflective, bordering on metallic. I love the color and the idea of the finish... but it is a streaky, globby mess and I hate CC's formula to begin with. This polish is just terrible! I couldn't stand to wear it for more than a few hours.

Gross and streaky. Even the top coat didn't help much.

$13 for the set of 4 colors from BB, making 1 polish (all minis, 0.25 fl.oz.) worth $3.25.

theBalm Cosmetics How 'Bout Them Apples? in Pie

How 'Bout Them Apples?

This is a new product from theBalm, and it is cream-based lip and cheek stain. The full-sized kit comes with six colors, all with apple-themed names, in a palette.

Oh, hello.

I got the color "pie" which is a bright pink, that blends out to a natural looking flush. It's not that bad. It is on the thinner, greasy side of things, but it isn't super drying like a lot of 2-in-1 products.

Pie on my lips...
...and contouring. See, BB? I'm way ahead of you.

I like the convenience of this, and the little magnetic case it came in, so it will be good to keep in my purse for touch-ups. Not my favorite product, but it doesn't suck either.

Pie on my cheeks, too!
I'm wearing the Porridge Duck-backed t-shirt from March Golden Tote :)

The full size looks to be $32 for 20g (3 1/3 g per color), and the sample is not labelled with a mass. Judging from the size of the pans in the full palette, and the size of the sample, I would estimate 1g of product in the version BB sent, making it worth $1.60.

Kind Healthy Grain Bar in Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt

Kind bar

Oh, Birchbox. I would so much rather get a foil-packet-product than receive another granola/power/meal replacement bar. Kind is a good brand, and I will definitely eat this for breakfast at some point this week, but I don't subscribe to BB to try food. This is something I would normally pick up at the supermarket to try. What I like about BB is that they send new products from familiar brands, or small versions of expensive products that I normally wouldn't buy. This is not in line with their usual standard, and I get disappointed every time it happens.

This is worth about $0.79

Birchbox April 2014
All Together

Total Value $14.64. After reviews, I got another $5 worth of point to spend in the BB shop. This isn't a very high value overall, but it is still worth more than the $10 I paid for it. I will eat the Kind bar, and I will use up the face soap. The theBalm product is ok, and I will keep it around. That's about it.

This was just a mediocre month for me. I've had worse, but there wasn't anything amazing in this batch of samples.

If you want to try out Birchbox, please use my link here. It costs $10 per month and your samples are personalized based on a quiz you fill out when you sign up. You will get 4-6 deluxe, and sometimes full-sized, items from skincare to hair products to makeup. Each item you receive, you can review for 10 BB points. Every 100 points gets you $10 to spend in the online BB shop! You also get 50 points for each referral.

Retrospective: Ipsy November 2012

This was the first month since I had been subscribing that there was an "OR" item. There were a few months before I joined where this happened.

Ipsy November 2012: Month 4; Party Perfect!

November 2012 Bag
Photo from Ipsy

This bag was pretty simple. It was dark brown with a faux-leather zipper. The inside of the bag was also dark brown.

BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Dare Devil
Photo from Ipsy

This smells like spiced rum to me, which makes it weird to use. I do like the color, though! It is on the sheer side so it isn't too dark, and has some nice shimmer to it without being overly glittery. It's a very nice holiday color.

Full size is $18 for 4.5 mL. The sample Ipsy sent was half of the full size, 2.25 mL, for a value of $9.

Chella Defining Brow Gel (Clear)
Photo from Ipsy

This was the either/or item. Other people received a sample of Benefit's They're Real! Mascara. I wouldn't pay full price for just a clear eyebrow gel, but I do use this now that I have it. I would imagine there isn't much of a difference between this and a drugstore brand, other than the price.

Full size (0.2 fl.oz.) costs $18 and the sample size 0.12 fl.oz which gives it a value of $10.80

theBalm Meet Matt(e) in Matt Batali
Photo from Ipsy
I like that this eyeshadow pan came in its own little magnetic box! It keeps it from getting everywhere and I don't have to stick a magnet to it or anything. This is a matte eggplant color, and looks really nice as part of a purple smokey eye. They don't make the original Meet Matt(e) palette anymore, but they do have a Meet Matt(e) Nude version with more eyeshadow for your money.

Meet Matt(e) Nude is $42 for 25.5g (9 shadows). The sample weight is 0.9g, making it worth $1.48 at the nude palette pricing. If I went by the discontinued palette pricing it would be slightly more, as that one was more expensive per gram of shadow.

Nailtini Nail Lacquer in Millionaire
Photo from Ipsy

This is the first Nailtini product I received, and I really liked it. This is a clear base with rose gold microglitter and gold and green bar glitters. It is another nice holiday color. It applies well and dries fast, since it is a glitter.

This is full size (0.5 fl.oz.) and retails for $13.

Starlet Intense Eyeliner in Chocolate
Photo from Ipsy

This was a dud.

This is full size (1.5g), and while this color isn't on their website and the packaging on their other eyeliners is different, they sell for $11.

Total Value $45.28

I have said it before, and I'll say it again: Ipsy sends you a great value for your $10. This bag was full or deluxe sample items and is definitely for the makeup-obsessed. There was a little of every makeup category in this bag, which Ipsy is really good at doing.

Ipsy costs $10/month, including shipping and sends you a box of 4-6 samples and sometimes full-sized products. If you would like to sign up, my link is here and I will earn a free item if 2 people sign up with my link.

This post contains products I purchased with my own money. No compensation was received for this post and all opinions are my own. This post contains a referral link, see above for details.

Retrospective: Ipsy October 2012

At this point, Ipsy was in their 11th month. Ipsy Match hadn't started, so everyone got the same thing in their bag, with some color variations.

Ipsy October 2012: Month 3; Hello, Bombshell.

October 2012 Bag
Photo from Ipsy

This month's bag was black and white chevron print with a red zipper. I still use it for first aid stuff in my work bag, but the white is a little dirty now.

Be a Bombshell Eyeliner in Onyx
Photo from Ipsy
This was full-sized and sells on Be a Bombshell's website for $14. The marker tip is nice, you can get a thick or thin line depending on how you hold it. I have used this quite a bit for cat-eyes and like it a lot.

Coastal Scents Eyeshadow Quads, Set 4 (Upper Right)
Photo from Ipsy

I mentioned these in my Ipsy favorites post. I've used every color except the hot pink from this quad and they are all nicely pigmented and work well together.

Net weight 2g. Coastal Scents sells individual pans for $1.95 and they are 1.5g. This makes the overall value of the 4 mini shadows $2.60.

Mirenesse Lip Bomb #9 Color
Photo from Ipsy

Lip Bomb
Photo from Ipsy
This was full-sized (3.1g) and sells for about $35.10. Too bad I don't like it.

Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment
Photo from Ipsy

This hair oil is part natural oil and part dimethicone, but I still like it. It make my hair glossy and it smells amazing. I can't describe it, you will have to take my word for it.

This was a 15 mL travel size, which sells for $12 on their website.

theBalm What's Your Type Mascara in The Bodybuilder
Photo from Ipsy

I used this mascara up! I loved it. I'd gladly accept another sample! I can't justify buying any more mascara since I have quite the stockpile, but I like this a lot. It didn't make my lashes clumpy, yet added volume.

Full size is 12 mL for $19. The sample is 3.5 mL for a value of $5.54

Total Value $69.24

The high value this month is mostly due to the failure that is the Lip Bomb. Bomb, indeed. Maybe I just need to learn to apply it... but then what do I do with pepto-colored lips? Everything else was a total hit for me, and this remains one of my favorite bags they have sent.

Ipsy costs $10/month, including shipping and sends you a box of 4-6 samples and sometimes full-sized products. If you would like to sign up, my link is here and I will earn a free item if 2 people sign up with my link.

Retrospective: Birchbox December 2012

See my first Retrospective for the answers to the quiz that I used.

December 2012: Month 10

Juicy Couture Perfume

Yeah. It's another Juicy perfume. Ho hum. It's pretty floral and a little too heavy for me. That's all I got.

Full size $90 for 3.4 oz. 1.5 mL sample value $1.35

Mox Botanicals Lip Butter in Pomegranate & Fig

I really wish this hadn't been in my pocket when I put my pants through the wash! The one use I got out of it was really nice, and the scent was unusual, but great. Oh well.

Full size $16 for 0.2 oz, they sent a half size (0.1 oz), worth $8.

Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo

This is an awesome sulfate-free clarifying shampoo. It smells GREAT and makes my hair super-clean. I highly recommend it. I'm thankful BB sent such a large sample! I bring it with me when I travel and it makes my vacations that much more special.

Full size $32 for 250 mL, sample size 52 mL for $6.66
theBalm Cosmetics Hot Mama
This is my new favorite blush for summer! It is the perfect color, and has a hint of shimmer. In fact, I was doing a friend's makeup for a fancy event and she asked if I could use "whatever made [me] look so glowy on [her]". Good complement for a great product! When I use this up, I'm definitely buying the full version!

Full size $20 for 7.08 grams, sample is 1g for $2.82

Tweezerman Filemate

It's a nail file. It files my nails. I wouldn't buy it for $5, but I'll take it if they send it for free! At least it is a cute pattern. I think I ended up giving this away in a gift with some polish.

This is full size and Birchbox sells it for $5

Total Value $23.83

Two of the five products were awesome! the others are a little mediocre, but that's what you get with BB sometimes. Hot Mama totally makes this box worth it!

Birchbox costs $10/month, including shipping and sends you a box of 4-6 samples and sometimes full-sized products. You can review the products you receive for 10 Birchbox points each. For every $1 you spend in the BB shop, you also receive 1 BB point. For every 100 BB points you accumulate, you get $10 to spend in their shop. If you would like to sign up, my link is here and I will earn 50 BB points at the end of your first month.

Retrospective: Birchbox June 2012

See my first Retrospective for the answers to the quiz that I used.

June 2012: Month 4

Comodynes Self-Tanning Intensive Towelette (2)
Photo from Birchbox

To be honest, I still haven't tried these. I am supa-dupa pale and NEVER tan. I use sunscreen on my face every day and in the summer I am religious about reapplying sunscreen. I don't stop at tan, I go through to burn and then fade back to white. Nothing but white and red for me. So, I am afraid to try these! I haven't had much luck with self tanners in the past and always end up streaky or orange or can't reach places like my back. Maybe some day!

$14.99 for a pack of 8. I was sent 2 packets, for a value of $3.75

Eyeko Fat Eye Stick in Petrol Blue
Photo from Birchbox

Another full-sized product! This is a nice, vibrant navy color. I would use it as an eyeliner, but it is not as smudge-proof as my beloved Urban Decay 24/7 liners. I have a 24/7 in a similar color, but it has some sparkle to it. If I want something without sparkle and without staying power, this is what I go to. So.. never.

Full size, $15 for 0.14oz. I received the full size.

John Varvatos Star USA
Photo from Birchbox
This was an "extra" that was thrown in to promote Birchbox Man's new launch. They included a sample size of this cologne to give to a "Birchbox man in your life". I gave it to my boyfriend and it has sat unopened on his dresser ever since. He doesn't wear cologne and probably will just end up throwing this away when he finds it under the stack of receipts it's currently hiding under.

$55/100 mL full size, sample value (assuming 1.5 mL) is $0.82

Likewise Facial Moisturizer + Sun Protectant SPF 50 for Normal to Oily Skin
Photo from Birchbox

This was more like a sunscreen than a moisturizer, and I used it as such on our trip to Europe. It was fine and I didn't burn, so it did its job. That's all I have to say about that.

$44 for 50 mL. Sample size 5 mL, value $4.40

theBalm Cosmetics Stainiac in Beauty Queen
Photo from Birchbox
This is similar to Benetint, but with more of a gel-like formula. It can be tricky to apply quickly enough that it doesn't stain in a blob where you put it on your cheek, so I use it as a lip stain. It's a nice bright magenta.

Full size $17 for 0.3 oz. Sample size was 0.04 oz for a value of $2.27

tili Bags Small Collection (Quart Size)
Photo from Birchbox

This was just a thicker, printed ziplock bag. The zippy part broke on mine, so it was no use after that. It would be cute to use these for flying, to keep all of your liquids, but it seems a little expensive for such poor quality.

Pack of 12 is $8.49. 1 bag has a value of $0.71.

Total Value $26.95

Another full-sized product and another bag way over the $10 I paid for it. Not bad. I got some use out of a few things, and did not out of the others, but there was nothing that I hated.

My All-Subscription Box Vacation, Part 2

I'm getting excited for my vacation this weekend! Here is what is in my makeup bag- almost everything is from subscription boxes!

The non-subscription box products

NYC Browser Brush-On Brow Kit because nothing finishes your look like filled-in brows! This may be all I end up using. Who knows.

Bare Minerals Original Foundation in case I need some extra coverage

Various brushes and an eyelash curler. Some of these are from sub boxes (like the SoHo brush in my Ipsy top 5), and some are not. Either way, they are not anything special.

These will make me feel pretty

Blinc Mascara (Birchbox July 2012) I love this tubing mascara. It doesn't wash off unless you want it to- perfect for going for a swim!

Chella Ivory Lace Eyebrow Pencil (Ipsy June 2013) I've already written about this in my top 5 Ipsy list.

Pop Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon in Coral Crush (Ipsy July 2013) Same with this! It's the perfect summer day lip color.

Vincent Longo Lipstain SPF 15 Lipstick in Cherry (Glossybox January 2013) For a nice dinner out, no other lipstick can beat this one, especially in a classic red. The stain lasts all night, through dinner and drinks, and doesn't come off on anyone else's cheeks or lips.

Mai Couture Highlighter Papier (Ipsy December 2012). For when I feel fancy. I tried using this over the winter to a formal event, but I was just too darn pale for it to look good. Maybe now that I'm 0.005 shades darker, it will look better.

Mirabella Perfecting Powder (Ipsy May 2013). See my other list linked above for a proclamation of my love for this product. It will not leave my sight until it is used up. I will then hold a funeral for it.

Ada Cosmetics Bronzer in Peach (Birchbox July 2012). For some contouring if I feel like it, and in place of a blush if I want to get crazy with the beachy look. This isn't too dark for my skin tone, which is amazing.

theBalm Hot Mama Shadow/Blush (Birchbox December 2012). One of my favorite blushes of all time! I was told it made me all glowy, and who doesn't want that? This barely missed out on being on my top 5 Birchbox list. It is awesome and super-flattering.

Coastal Scents Eyeshadow Quads (Ipsy October 2012, February 2013) Boy am I bringing all of my entire top 5 Ipsy products? I think so...

theBalm Meet Matt(e) Matt Batali (Ipsy November 2012). It seems like theBalm is only selling the nude matte palette now, not the original one. Oh well, I still like this shadow, especially in a smokey eye.

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint (Birchbox September 2012). I don't plan on wearing foundation, just this. I'm bringing the Bare Minerals for night if we go out, but this will be just fine for the day. I really like this product but not as much as I like my Dr. Jart BB. Maybe if I feel the need to buy an every-day matte product I will get this one. For vacation, it will be great.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil (Ipsy December 2012) Yup. I've got my whole top 5. I also have almost every color ever made of this pencil and there is not a better eyeliner that I have been able to find. It's not up for discussion. These are the best, and they come in the best colors.

Vincent Longo Duo Lip Pencil (Allure Sample Society July 2012). For under my lipsticks, or by itself with some chapstick or gloss over it. This is a really nice pencil, and it is great to have two slightly different shades in one. Travel is all about multi-use products, right? Streamline your packing!

Look at those packing skills!

Not all of this fit in the July Ipsy bag... Everything in the first picture was left out. So, I put it all into the January bag instead. That is the biggest one they have sent out, and all of my brushes fit (diagonally). I can't wait!

This post contains items that were received in Sample Society, Birchbox and Ipsy, both of which are purchased with my own funds. All opinions are my own.
